Training for K9 Trauma in a War Zone: My Experience in Afghanistan 2020-2021

This seminar is part of the Animal Matters Seminar Series presented by Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy

Sean Majoy is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Cummings school and will soon become the director of Emergency and Critical Care at Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment & Specialties in Walpole, MA. He is the current president of the National Association of Veterinary Emergency Medical Services and is very active in the statewide efforts to teach pre-hospital care of working dogs to emergency medical providers. Dr. Majoy may be considered a “Triple Jumbo”, having completed veterinary school, residency, and served as both full time and adjunct faculty at Tufts---home of the Jumbos.  He has spent most of his veterinary career as an officer in the US Army Veterinary Corps, first serving on active duty for 12 years, a span which included two overseas assignments at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul, Korea and one assignment heading the internal medicine and outpatient section at the LTC Daniel E. Holland Military Working Dog Hospital on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  During the last 6 years he has served as a reservist, recently leading the last fully staffed veterinary detachment in  Afghanistan from 2020-2021.  His primary areas of interest are management of trauma and most aspects of working dog medicine. He is here today to discuss his experiences in Afghanistan with regards to training veterinary and human healthcare providers in the management of K9 trauma and the challenges of developing a transfusion medicine program in a deployed environment.
