Not being able to understand their behaviors can interfere with interpretation of PE findings. The current curriculum does not spend a lot of time considering the behavior standards for non-traditional species, despite the increase in exotic companion animal ownership. Many of these species hide their pain/illness and can present late in their prognostic course. It is important for both clients and clinicians to understand the diverse behaviors of these species to optimize patient wellbeing and aid in the diagnostic process.
