Join the Dean's Office for a lunch and learn with Dr. Jean-Yin Tan, Associate Professor University of Calgary, where she presents Rethinking Clinical Skills Assessment:
Brief description: With class expansions, limited resources, increasing accessibility and accommodations, and changing demographics, how do we adapt Clinical Skills assessment to the new landscape? In this session we will explore what strategies and innovations we have implemented at University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to stay ahead in this evolving academic world.
Bio: Jean-Yin Tan DVM, DACVIM (LAIM), MBA
Jean-Yin Tan is an Associate Professor of Teaching at University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). She graduated from Cornell University with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2005, completed a large animal internal medicine residency at University of Minnesota, and served as Managing Partner of an ambulatory and referral equine veterinary clinic in Upstate New York for almost 5 years. In 2015 she joined the University of Calgary where she is now a tenured Associate Professor, Chair of the Clinical Skills program, Business Stream Lead of the Professional Skills program, and has created clinical partnerships with local Indigenous communities. In 2022 she completed a Master of Business Administration (with honors).
Jean-Yin has published on clinical skills assessment and has presented her veterinary educational research in Austria, Malaysia, and Scotland. She is now a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education and the Chair of the Veterinary Education Research Group at University of Calgary.
A winner of the 2019 AAEP Good Works for Horses award, she was named one of Avenue Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2020, received the University of Calgary Teaching Award for Educational Leadership in 2021, and Vet Candy's Veterinary Inspiration Award in 2022.
