Fall Workshops@Hirsh workshops will be held on Wednesdays from 2-3pm via Zoom, unless otherwise noted. 
Registration for workshops is required.  A Zoom link and password will be sent to registrants.

Approaching the Literature Review

Description: In this workshop, students will learn how to approach the literature review. Topics covered include database selection, devising effective search techniques, limiting articles to relevant study-types, and tools for keeping track of results.  

Zotero: The Basics

Description: This session will introduce you to Zotero, a free citation management tool. Attendees will learn about and practice: 

•    Adding references to a Zotero library from websites, article databases, and PDFs
•    Generating in-text citations and bibliographies in Word
•    Setting up Zotero groups to share references with collaborators

While this session is for beginners--no previous experience required!--it's helpful for attendees to download and install Zotero in advance. 

EndNote: the Basics

Description: This one-hour session will introduce you to the basics of using the citation management program EndNote.   EndNote allows you to create a library of references, attach and read PDFs, and generate in-text citations and bibliographies in Word documents.  This session is for beginners - no previous experience required! 

PubMed: An Introduction

Description: This workshop will introduce you to PubMed, the world’s premiere biomedical literature database.  We will review the content of this database, planning and executing a search strategy, narrowing search results, finding full-text, and exporting results to a citation management program.


Beyond PubMed: Scopus and Web of Science

Description: Learn why Scopus and Web of Science are worth adding to your search toolkit.  In addition to extensive coverage of the biomedical literature these databases are a fantastic way to look at journal impact, gain insight into how many times an article has been cited, and identify potential collaborators. This workshop will also compare Web of Science and Scopus to help you decide which database is best for you. 

Open Access Publishing Support @Tufts

Description:  Ready to publish, but short on funds to make it a reality?  In honor of Open Access Week, we'll spotlight the different ways Tufts supports and sustains open access and other forms of publishing.  The library's here to help broaden your research reach! 
RCR Credit:  Eligible attendees can receive credit (1 hr) for partial fulfillment of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training requirements. In order to be eligible for RCR credit, during the workshop you must: display your full name (first and last), have your camera  turned on, and attend at least 50 minutes of the workshop. This workshop addresses subject area (J) responsible authorship and publication

This workshop is co-taught by Berika Williams (she/her), a Research and Instruction Librarian at Ginn Library at the Fletcher School and Amy LaVertu (she/her), a Research and Instruction Librarian at the Hirsh Health Sciences Library.  This workshop is an excellent opportunity for people conducting inter-disciplinary and/or policy-focused research.

Sit Down & Write

Description: Are you interested in having time carved out in your schedule for working on a project?  Together, we’ll work via Zoom separately together using the Pomodoro Technique to motivate each other to actually sit down and write.* This is open to anyone at Tufts University looking for time to write! 
*Quiet non-writing-specific activities are also welcome. Attendance for the entire hour is
encouraged, but not required.
