A Career in International Veterinary Medicine
Presented by
Jeff Mariner, D.V.M., Ph.D.
Research Professor, Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health
Surveillance and Risk Assessment Co-Coordinator, USAID STOP Spillover
Dr. Jeff Mariner (V’87) is a veterinary epidemiologist who has combined his in-depth laboratory knowledge, field experience, capacity building skills, and epidemiological training to contribute to the development of more effective health institutions. He began his professional career with the development of a heat-stable rinderpest vaccine that was used as the vaccine of choice in the global eradication of rinderpest, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization. More recently, he has developed a thermostable PPR vaccine and worked on projects aimed at PPR eradication. Dr. Mariner’s work emphasizes trans-disciplinary solutions that combine technical, social, and economic perspectives. His interest in and experience with community-based approaches within pastoral and mixed farming societies lead to the development of innovative methods to deliver animal health services and surveillance to some of the most difficult regions of the world. He has been closely associated with the implementation of health emergency schemes in Afghanistan, DR Congo, Sudan, and Somalia, where he has advocated for relief approaches that save lives while building capacity and reducing vulnerability to future shocks. His professional experience includes work in more than 40 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East.
