Interested in doing therapy animal visitation with your animal? Paws for People is having a Pet Partners Handler Training workshop on April 6. The all-day workshop goes through what makes a good therapy animal, the importance of being a proactive handler, how to select a good facility fit for you and your animal, and the different types of animals who can partner with you through the Pet Partners program. Recognizing stress in your animal, and how to deal with that stress on a visit is covered. Proper grooming and equipment used during visits is covered. Insurance, confidentiality, and HIPPA regulations are discussed. How to interact with different populations is also covered, as well as the importance of consent from client and animal. The end of the workshop is a demonstraton of the evaluation that is the second step of the Pet Partners registration process.
Preregistration is required by creating a volunteer account through petpartners.org and signing up through their course and event calendar, as well as reaching out to us directly through pawsforpeople@tufts.edu.
The course cost for Tufts people is $75. Non-Tufts people is $100. Discounts are available - please ask.
