February is Black History Month. Each day one historical fact will be shared from the time period of 1492 - 2000, in 25 year increments.
Today's fact:
1826-1850
Blacks number ~2.3 million as the US population approached 13 million people. Nat Turner led a failed slave rebellion in VA and was hanged for this action. In a dubious honor, NC became the last southern state to deny the vote to free blacks. Canada gives Black people the right to vote. 53 African slaves mutinied aboard the Amistad – they were later freed to return to Africa.
