February is Black History Month. Each day one historical fact will be shared from the time period of 1492 - 2000, in 25 year increments.
Today's fact:
1876-1900
Reconstruction ended in 1877 and southern states were no longer regulated by Washington. Tuskegee Institute opened in 1881 with Booker T. Washington as its only teacher. The “Mississippi Plan” is enacted in 1890. This plan virtually eliminated Black voters from elections by imposing strict limitations on those qualified to vote. In 1896, Plessy v. Ferguson ruled that “separate but equal” accommodations are “reasonable”.
